Once An Area Becomes Desert (via Desertification) Can It Ever Be Restored (to Grow Crops, Trees)? How So?

I had a student in my class this question, and I do not know the answer. As soon as desertification takes land, the land can be brought back?

  1. Prof. Bird says:

It can. Sometimes people help, similar to what people do after things like mountain top removal mining. Without help, it takes about 25-50 years to grow an inch of “good” soil. So, it takes at least 500-1000 years.

Parts of Israel have been brought back from the desert. They have had to do some extreme work. Drip Irrigation, water conservation, etc.
