A person with a unique name emailed me Friday. Today, I get spam with her name in the subject. How? Why?
How is this happening? I have AVG and Ad-Aware. I use a Cactus Spam filter, I don’t read the spam, but I do look over the subjects to make sure nothing ends up in the spam folder that doesn’t belong. I’m very internet savvy. I don’t believe I have spyware on my computer. What is going on? Also, this spam was not from her email address, her name was in the subject only. To make me look at it. Is someone hacking into my computer maybe?
I have seen virus behaviour like this before. The virus may be on her computer and has used her address book entries to profligate itself using an open SMTP server, fake email address and just copying her name into the subject, as you say, to make you look at it.
So it’s likely that it’s not you that has the virus, it is your friend.
